Twenty Years Ago Today 8/16, We Held a Mental Health Hunger Strike & Won Global Media Coverage!

MindFreedom has links about the Mental Health Fast for Freedom 20 years ago today August 16, 2023, winning global media, including Washington Post, LA Times, NPR and BBC.

We, hunger strikers based mainly in LA with support fasts, pressured the American Psychiatric Association to admit publicly in writing they have no evidence for a “chemical imbalance” medical model theory of mental disorders.

You can find the historic links here and share:

Mad In America posted a blog reflecting on the Mental Health Fast for Freedom:

Here’s a free doc, less than 40 min., on the Mental Health Fast for Freedom:

By coincidence, 8/16 is also used for some other unique holidays. You see, I like to find out about unusual days and 8/16 has two contradictory celebrations: National Roller Coaster Day and National Bratwurst Day. Great day to also celebrate our Fast For Freedom.

Judi and then Justin (Dart) became friends and heroes. I well remember the circle around Justin providing a living lesson about his frequent-sign-off I LOVE YOU, LEAD ON.

All advice & feedback from everyone is welcome.

Wednesday, 2 August 2023, 6 pm et, 3 pm pt. MADPRIDE Revolution in Mental Health –– Bridging Age & Other Marginalizations

David began his psychiatric survivor activism as a teen. What has he learned (if anything) from 47 years in the Mad Movement? How can we build multi-generational & other bridges? How does the mad movement help lead a Global Nonviolent Revolution that we can hopefully now see must happen very, very soon! The presentation will cover “The early years”, “MindFreedom”, “Hunger strike”, “Fallen leaders”, “Complex bridge to cross-disability”, Uniting despite divisions: Survivor/Consumer, Age, BIPOC, LGBT, Class, etc.

This is a multi-generational struggle, support marginalized voices. I Love You, Lead On!

Watch Out for False Info Using my Name

Older white male in blue vest, green shirt.
David W. Oaks

Today, 28 July 2023, several supportive individuals have contacted me with concern: An individual is putting out fake material onto the web claiming it is by me. It is not. I have filed complaints to authorities, and will continue to advocate for my rights.

The person putting out the false information has also put out public and repeated racist messages that have even used the “n word.” There is no excuse for racism, whether anyone is a psychiatric survivor or not. After I complained about this racism, there was no statement of apology, and instead the false information campaign began.

If anyone needs to double check if anything is actually by me, just contact me at: davidwoaks@gmail.com.

Special Message That Put Us Over the Top

Below is a message from well-respected activist and close friend David Zupan. But first, here is his one-minute hilarious video to support my medical trust campaign. Please share widely:

A brief message from activist/friend David Zupan:

Hello Community Member,

Earlier this year in May 2022, we launched our “Unleash the Oaks” fundraising campaign for long time activists David Oaks and Debra Nunez.

Now thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, we are much closer to our target goal of $12,000. To reach it by 12/31/22, we need to raise $3351. Fortunately major donors have stepped up and will add 50 cents to every dollar you donate so your gift goes 50% larger in 2022!

So we’re counting on you and other community members for the final push. If you can’t afford to donate, you can also help just by sharing this message widely.

Thanks so much for your support,
David Zupan

Help Wanted: Hiring Careworker(s) in Eugene, Oregon

As an individual with quadriplegia, I have had a wonderful team of fantastic careworkers. For a decade, about half a dozen careworkers have maintained my independence here in our home with my amazing wife, Debra, in Eugene, Oregon.

David Oaks and Debra Nunez
David & Debra in their home, which they call “MadSwan,” in southwest Eugene.

We now have new openings for one or more careworkers. Ideally, you would already have certification and a careworker number from Senior & Disability Services. However, we have helped people brand-new to this career to get their SDS number, which allows them to work for many other disabled consumer/employers.

I have more information about this position on this page on my blog here:
