David W. Oaks, an international leader for the movement for psychiatric patients’ rights

David W. Oaks has been a community organizer for human rights in mental health since 1976. He’s a psychiatric survivor and, since 1986, was director of MindFreedom International. On this web site you’ll find a capsule summary about David, along with recommended resource links and more about how to bring his training workshops and popular speaking engagements to your area.

David is a highly sought-after authority on psychiatric rights in the mental health system and advocates forcefully for the dignity and independence of those labeled by the system and their families.  His perspective is–and always has been–deeply-rooted in an unwavering belief in the principles of informed consent and freedom to choose.

His public speaking has taken him to a wide range of places in the world, including including Canada, Eastern and Western Europe, Africa, Central and South America and, of course, much of the United States.
